Short Biography

 
  After finishing compulsory education he has started to study theoretical physics at the Karl-Franzens-University Graz. He received the Mag. degree in 1997 for his work in the field of subnuclear physics.

From 1997 until 1998 he has been a scientific member at the Institute of Theoretical Physics, Karl-Franzens-University in Graz, at the same time being accountable for the UNIX-cluster of that Institute.

From 1998 until 2001 he has been employed at the Ars Electronica Center Linz as an executive manager of the development department Futurelab. Since 2001 he is scientific member at the Institute of Pervasive Computing, Johannes Kepler University Linz.

Since 1996 Volker Christian has collaborated in more than 30 projects in the field of computer-arts being a project manager for many of them. He has worked together with many national and international artists. In cooperation with the Austrian Broadcasting Cooperation (ORF) he has participated in 1997 at the Documenta X in Kassel, Germany. In 2000, as member of the Telezone Team, he has won a reward of distinction in the .NET category of the Prix Ars Electronica for the telerobotic art installation Telezone.

He has collaborated in many national and international industrial cooperations e.g. "VAI Trainingssimulator" (VÖST), "SIEMENS HYBREX" (Siemens), "INSTAR" (Siemens), "SILICON Context-Framework" (Siemens), and "SMS-Notification" (Vienna City Marathon).

Volker Christian has held several lectures and programming exercises with topics in the field of programming languages (Pascal, C/C++, Java, C# and .Net). His main research interests in computer science lie in the fields of network computing, frameworks- and middleware architecture, distributed systems, distributed cooperative environments, and programming languages. Currently he is pursuing project work related to context based application frameworks, geo-enhanced mobile navigation systems, and RFID based realtime notification systems.
