INSTAR (Information and Navigation Through Augmented Reality)
The aim of the project is a new car navigation prototype which reduces the “abstraction gap” between current navigation systems and the real world perception by using Augmented Reality concepts in the graphical display of the navigation device.
With this project we are proposing a new, augmented reality based navigation assistance for mobile users. The SOFT group is responsible for the software framework integrating real time imaging, pattern recognition, tracing, global position sensing (GPS), the on-car accelerometer, speed and orientation sensing, and display control.
The car navigation system has been completed and will (most likely) be rolled out by a major European automotive manufacturer within the next three years. The development of the PDA based personal navigation assistance system (PARIS) is still in progress.
