Thermal Imaging for Emotional State Recognition [VERSTECKT]

Problem definition, Approach:

  • Implicit interaction using the emotional state of a person is a promising approach to improve HCI
  • Statement: Emotional state of a person is correlated with his/her body surface temperature
    • measurement taken with thermal IR (infrared) camera
    • applied technology: FLIR (forward looking infra red)
  • Measurement experiments with factor variation
    • different pieces of music, still images, movies
    • continuously record thermal image 
    • evaluation & interpretation: potential/influence

Expected outcome:

  • Early recognition of emotional states based on body surface temperature (automatic reactions)
  • Personal adaptation ("like/dislike stimulation")
  • Gesture, movement detection
  • etc.


  • Interested in prototyping, software development
    • good programming skills (Java, C/C++/C#)
  • User Study: Setup and carry out the experiment
  • Good command of English (understanding of related work; Thesis is preferred written in English)
  • Typesetting using LaTeX (--> Miktex, TeXnicCenter) + BibTeX (-->Jabref)

Time schedule:
