Pervasive Computing is a research area dealing with embedded systems, real-time and distributed computing. A major topic is the diffusion of digital elements into a real-world environment, enriching it with 'smart' artifacts that provide new, more natural interaction paradigms.
Enhancing daily-use appliances with computing power and the ability to transmit data over wireless links creates a perspective, where interaction with all things over global networks becomes a reality.
We enhance PDAs with RFID readers and WLAN cards. Objects on the campus carry RFID tags and can therefore be identified. Using the ID of an object, a Location Server resolves the number to an URL that can be displayed in a standard Web-browser.
The URL returned need not be static, but can be created dynamically depending on other parameters like user preferences and time. An example would be the status of the person inhabiting an office or getting the lecture notes for a class room at a specific time of day (the notes for the next lesson held there).
