The 2016 edition of the SASO conference series will be held in Augsburg, Germany, in the week of September 12-16, 2016.
The aim of the Self-Adaptive and Self-Organizing systems conference series (SASO) is to provide a forum for the foundations of a principled approach to engineering systems, networks and services based on self-adaptation and self-organization. The complexity of current and emerging networks, software and services, especially in dealing with dynamics in the environment and problem domain, has led the software engineering, distributed systems and management communities to look for inspiration in diverse fields (e.g., complex systems, control theory, artificial intelligence, sociology, and biology) to find new ways of designing and managing such computing systems. In this endeavor, self-organization and self-adaptation have emerged as two promising interrelated approaches. Many significant research problems exist related to self-adaptive or self-organizing systems. A challenge in self-adaptation is often to identify how to change specific behavior to achieve the desired improvement. Another major challenge is to predict and control the global system behavior resulting from self-organization. Yet more challenges arise from the confluence of self-adaptation with self-organization. For instance, how do self-* mechanisms that work well independently operate in combination? How are meso-level structures formed which leverage micro-level behavior to achieve desirable macro-level outcomes, and avoid undesirable ones?
The tenth edition of the SASO conference embraces the inter-disciplinarity and the scientific, empirical and application dimensions of self-* systems; it thus aims to attract participants with different backgrounds, to foster cross-pollination between research fields, and to expose and discuss innovative theories, design principles, frameworks, methodologies, tools, and applications.

At the ACM conference on Designing Interactive Systems in 2014 we will explore the idea that the design of interactive systems is entering a new socio-technical paradigm around the idea of craft. The theme of the conference is “Crafting Design”. We see the confluence of phenomena that may constitute new approaches and new foci in HCI and interaction design. The re-emergence of hand skills is evident in the development of multi-touch and full body interfaces. DIY and Maker cultures has become a wide spread phenomenon in which craftsmanship of the maker matters. Wearable computing revisits the use of traditional craft in new way and the (technologically) self-constructed self is another kind of democratic craft. Documentations of the self where we create enduring records of everything from social encounters to our heart-rates become designed vehicles for abstract mirrors of the self.

ADAPTIVE 2014, The Sixth International Conference on Adaptive and Self-adaptive Systems and Applications, targets advanced system and application design paradigms driven by adaptiveness and self-adaptiveness. With the current tendencies in developing and deploying complex systems, and under the continuous changes of system and application requirements, adaptation is a key feature. Speed and scalability of changes require self-adaptation for special cases. How to build systems to be easily adaptive and self-adaptive, what constraints and what mechanisms must be used, and how to evaluate a stable state in such systems are challenging duties. Context-aware and user-aware are major situations where environment and user feedback is considered for further adaptation.

The International Conference on Social Informatics (SocInfo 2013) is an interdisciplinary venue for researchers from Computer Science, Informatics, Social Sciences and Management Sciences to share ideas and opinions, and present original research work on studying the interplay between socially-centric platforms and social phenomena. The ultimate goal of Social Informatics is to create better understanding of socially-centric platforms not just as a technology, but also as a set of social phenomena. To that end, we are inviting interdisciplinary papers, on applying information technology in the study of social phenomena, on applying social concepts in the design of information systems, on applying methods from the social sciences in the study of social computing and information systems, on applying computational algorithms to facilitate the study of social systems and human social dynamics, and on designing information and communication technologies that consider social context.

In media-rich living spaces (like cities of the future, urban and rural living residencies, virtual societies, etc.), where thousands of people are overflooded with signals and messages at all levels of perception and modalities (visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory), the (i) dynamics of individual attention and the (ii) emergence of collective attention appear to be among the most demanding challenges of the information society. It is of high interest to understand how spontaneous, local, human attention raises, propagates and eventually fades among large populations and society itself.

IWSOS 2012 is the sixth workshop in a series of multidisciplinary events dedicated to self-organization in networks and networked systems.
Self-organization relates the behavior of the individual components (the microscopic level) to the resulting networked structure and functionality of the overall system (the macroscopic level), where simple interactions at the microscopic level may already give rise to complex, adaptive, and robust behavior at the macroscopic level. The growing scale, complexity, and dynamics of (future) networked systems have been driving research from centralized solutions to self-organized networked systems. The applicability of well-known self-organizing techniques to specific networks and networked systems is being investigated, as well as adaptations and novel approaches inspired by cooperation in nature. Models originating from areas like control theory, complex systems research, evolutionary dynamics, sociology and game theory are increasingly applied to complex networks to analyze their behavior, robustness and controllability.
Self-organization principles do not only apply to the Internet and computer networks but also to a variety of other complex networks, like transportation networks, telephony networks, smart electricity grids, financial networks, social networks, and biological networks. “Network Science” and “Complex Networks theory” constitute new research areas that provide additional insights into self-organizing systems.

In-car interactive technology is becoming ubiquitous and cars are increasingly connected to the outside world. Drivers and passengers use this technology because it provides valuable services. Some technology, such as collision warning systems, assists drivers in performing their primary in-vehicle task (driving). Other technology provides information on myriad subjects or offers entertainment to the driver and passengers.
The challenge that arises from the proliferation of in-car devices is that they may distract drivers from the primary task of driving, with possibly disastrous results. Thus, one of the major goals of this conference is to explore ways in which in-car user interfaces can be designed so as to lessen driver distraction while still enabling valuable services. This is challenging, especially given that the design of in-car devices, which was historically the responsibility of car manufacturers and their parts suppliers, is now a responsibility shared among a large and ever-changing group of parties. These parties include car OEMs, Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers of factory-installed electronics, as well as the manufacturers of hardware and software that is brought into the car, for example on personal navigation devices, smartphones, and tablets.
As we consider driving safety, our focus in designing in-car user interfaces should not be purely on eliminating distractions. In-car user interfaces also offer the opportunity to improve the driver’s performance, for example by increasing her awareness of upcoming hazards. They can also enhance the experience of all kinds of passengers in the car. To this end, a further goal of AutomotiveUI 2011 is the exploration of in-car interfaces that address the varying needs of different types of users (including disabled drivers, elderly drivers or passengers, and the users of rear-seat entertainment systems). Overall our goal is to advance the state of the art in vehicular user experiences, in order to make cars both safer and more enjoyable places to spend time.

Shaping the Next Decade
Ambient Intelligence (AmI) represents a vision of the future in which products and services will be responsive to the user context, offering a rich variety of applications in the professional and consumer domains. AmI combines concepts of ubiquitous technology, intelligent systems and advanced user interface design putting the humans in the center of technological developments.
Starting as the European Symposium on Ambient Intelligence in 2003 the conference has grown to an annual international event that brings together researchers and serves as a forum to discuss the latest trends and solutions.
Following the publication of early scenarios on Ambient Intelligence in 2001 by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, the theme of AmI-11 will focus on the “The Road Ahead, Shaping the Next 10 years”.
